Foreign Ministry cautions of measles in U.S.

Taipei, Jan. 31 (CNA) Taiwanese nationals have been advised to take care when traveling to the United States as an outbreak of measles continues to affect California. The Foreign Ministry in Taipei made a special note Saturday of the disease that California's health department said has hit at least 40 people in Disneyland since December. According to the latest statistics as of Friday, there have been 91 confirmed measles cases across the state. Between Jan. 1 and Jan. 28, 84 people from 14 states were reported to have measles, most of which are linked to the outbreak at the amusement park in California, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Measles, a highly contagious viral respiratory disease, spreads through the air. It usually starts with a fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and sore throat, followed by a rash that spreads over the body. The disease is highly preventable through vaccinations. (By Elaine Hou)
