Firms seek opportunities in automotive use LED: research report

Taipei, Jan.31 (CNA) Taiwan's light-emitting diode (LED) industry has been gearing up to seek business opportunities in the automotive use LED market, according to Taipei-based market analyst firm TrendForce (????). LEDinside, a research unit under TrendForce, said that the automotive use LED market has generated an alternative sales source for local firms at a time when LED lighting suppliers are suffering from falling prices due to a supply glut in the global market. A research note released by LEDinside echoed the comments made by the Taiwan LED Lighting Industry Association (TLLIA, ??LED??????). The TLLIA said that the production value of the local LED industry could rise almost 15 percent year-on-year to NT$5.4 billion (US$171 million) in 2015 as many LED product exporters have been entering new turfs, including the automotive use LED business, to raise their sales. In the research note, LEDinside said that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of the automotive use LED business could hit 9 percent during the 2014-2018 period, although the threshold for manufacturers to enter the supply chain of this particular segment is high. The research group said that global production of the automotive use LED market could reach US$2.5 billion in 2018. Among the booming automotive use LED products, LEDinside said that it favors daytime running lamps and high-low beam headlights. The compound annual growth rate of these products could hit 21 percent and 48 percent, respectively, during the five-year period, beating the average of the entire automotive use LED business. LEDinside said that the daytime running lamp and high-low beam headlight segments are growing steadily as the industry has made significant progress in high efficiency LED production technology. With automotive used LED products more affordable, not only high-end car makers but also mid-range model suppliers have applied LED devices to their vehicles, giving additional support to the entire LED industry. In addition, with LED applications in global positioning systems, dashboards and other car panels on the rise, the research unit said, the production value of LED for car panel use is expected to grow to US$130 million in 2018, almost double the US$71 million seen in 2014.
