Malaysian climber dies on Snow Mountain

Taipei, Jan. 30 (CNA) A Malaysian woman was killed Friday when she fell into a valley while climbing Taiwan's second highest mountain Hsuehshan (??), also known as Snow Mountain, the Taichung City Fire Bureau said. The bureau said it was alerted by the fire department in Yilan County that an 11-member team was climbing the 3,886-meter high main peak of Snow Mountain when the 42-year-old woman fell into the ravine at the 10.7-kilometer mark on the trail. The team raced back down the mountain hoping to rescue her, but the woman was dead by the time they reached her. She had no vital signs, and fluid from her brain was seeping out of her head. The bureau said the other 10 team members returned to a mountain cottage. Eight rescuers have been dispatched to the scene of the accident and will help carry the woman's body down the mountain Saturday. (By Hau Hsueh-ching and Lilian Wu)
