Cabinet 'not aware' of reported resignation of planning minister

Taipei, Jan. 29 (CNA) Cabinet Spokesman Sun Lih-chyun (???) said Thursday that he is not aware of the reported resignation of Kuan Chung-ming (???) as minister of the National Development Council (NDC). Kuan did not attend the weekly Cabinet meeting earlier that morning. Sun offered no details after NDC officials would neither confirm nor deny an Apple Daily report that President Ma Ying-jeou has accepted Kuan's resignation and that Kuan will return to his teaching job in February. Responding to reporters' questions, the NDC officials referred them to the Executive Yuan. Apple Daily said on its website that the Executive Yuan is still considering who to appoint as the new head of the government agency responsible for economic planning. According to the paper, Kuan feels frustrated over the lack of progress of a bill that will establish free economic pilot zones in the country. Kuan, who received his Ph.D degree in economics from the University of California, San Diego, became chief of the ministerial-level Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) in February 2013 and continued to serve as the minister of its successor agency a year ago.
