Cross-strait Economic Cooperation Committee set to meet Thursday

Taipei, Jan. 26 (CNA) The Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Committee will hold its seventh regular meeting in Taipei Thursday to review the implementation of a landmark trade agreement between Taiwan and China, the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) said Wednesday. The committee will discuss the follow-up to the pact - the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) -- that was signed in 2010, the SEF (???)said. The discussions will include the implementation of the ECFA's (??????????) early harvest program, and the progress of six working groups charged with discussing the agendas of the trade-in-goods and trade-in-services agreements, investment, dispute settlement, and industrial and customs cooperation. In addition, the two sides will discuss the establishment of representative offices on each side of the strait, and will plan for the next stage of talks on that proposal. However, the main item on the meeting's agenda will be a decision on restarting the bilateral negotiations on a cross-strait trade-in-goods pact (??????) that is considered an important follow-up to the ECFA. SEF Vice Chairman Shih Hui-fen (???) and Zheng Lizhong (???), vice president of China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (???), will serve as the conveners of the meeting. Taiwan's top representative will be Deputy Economics Minister Cho Shih-cho (???), while China's will be Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Yan (??). The Cross-strait Economic Cooperation Committee (?????)is a negotiation platform established in January 2011, in accordance with the ECFA, to handle follow-up negotiations. Under the agreement, the committee holds a meeting every six months, with the two sides taking turns to host it. The last such meeting was held in Beijing in August 2014.
