European authors to attend Taipei book fair

Taipei, Jan. 28 (CNA) Several European authors are scheduled to attend the 2015 Taipei International Book Exhibition in February to meet local readers, organizers announced Wednesday. Among them are French writer and doctor Baptiste Beaulieu and French graphic novelist Cl幦ent Oubrerie, who co-authored the best-selling comic series "Aya of Yop City," according to the Taipei Book Fair Foundation. Hungarian illustrator Katalin Szegedi, the recipient of the 2005 Hungarian Illustrator of the Year award, will also attend the Taipei fair, as will German illustrator and graphic novelist Simon Schwartz, the foundation said. The German pavilion this year will feature over 130 graphic novels, children's books, comic books and literary publications, said Clemens Treter, director of the Goethe-Institut Taipei. There will be a strong focus on graphic novels because they are an emerging genre in Germany and because they are also popular in Taiwan, Treter told CNA. He said Schwartz, whose works often focus on historical topics, will give a lecture at the book fair and hold a workshop for Taiwanese comic artists. The European Union pavilion, meanwhile, will showcase publications from 15 European countries this year, said Frederic Laplanche, head of the European Economic and Trade Office in Taipei. It will also feature a photo exhibition of unique libraries across Europe, as well as books written by Taiwanese writers about Europe, he said. The annual Taipei International Book Exhibition, one of Asia's largest book fairs, will take place Feb. 11-16 at the Taipei World Trade Center exhibition halls 1 and 3. Over 1,000 publishers, writers, illustrators and experts in the publishing sector from around the world participated in the 2014 fair. (By Christie Chen)
