U.K. transport official hopes for rail cooperation with Taiwan

Taipei, Jan. 26 (CNA) The visiting U.K. minister of state for transport, Baroness Kramer, called on Taiwan's Minister of Transportation and Communications Chen Jian-yu (???) Monday to exchange views on Taiwan's railway construction and the business opportunities therein. Chen told Kramer that the government is pushing for improvements in Taiwan's rail safety, the phasing-out of outdated rolling stock and new purchase programs, as well as planned railway construction promoted by local governments. He added that Taiwan welcomes British participation in such projects. Kramer, who arrived in Taiwan a day earlier at the head of a 19-member delegation, is the highest-level official from the Department for Transport to visit Taiwan over the past decade. She also visited Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport's mass rapid transit system project Monday. On Tuesday, she is expected to make opening remarks at a U.K.-Taiwan railway seminar in Taipei. During the seminar, she will also witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Railway Engineering society of Taiwan and the U.K.'s Railway Industry Association.
