New transportation minister assumes office

Taipei, Jan. 26 (CNA) Taiwan's new minister of transportation and communications said Monday after assuming his post in a formal ceremony that his main priorities will be the high-speed rail, China's new flight routes and the Taoyuan Aerotropolis project. On the financial problems facing Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp., the company could face the risk of bankruptcy in April and the ministry has prepared for the worst, said the new minister, Chen Jian-yu (???). The Ministry of Transportation and Communications "is ready to take over the company to ensure that high-speed rail services will not be interrupted," Chen said. In terms of Beijing's plan to open four new flight routes close to the median line of Taiwan Strait, Chen said he would stick to the ministry's stance of asking the Chinese side to move the new routes westward of the median to safeguard aviation safety. Addressing the ambitious urban development plan close to Taiwan's largest gateway, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Chen called the planned Taoyuan Aerotropolis a "national establishment" that will boost economic growth in Taiwan from one generation to the next. Chen, who previously served as deputy transportation minister, succeeded Yeh Kuang-shih, who resigned on Jan. 9 after the ministry's proposal to restructure the high-speed rail's finances was rejected by lawmakers.
