Number of foreign male spouses hit 10-year high in 2014: report

Taipei, Jan. 25 (CNA) The number of foreign grooms that wedded Taiwanese brides last year totaled 4,521 in Taiwan, the highest number since 2003, according to the latest Ministry of the Interior (MOI) statistics. Meanwhile, 15,181 foreign women married Taiwanese men last year, more than triple the number of foreign male spouses, the ministry said in its regular report on marriage registrations in Taiwan. The report indicated that 55.8 percent of all the foreign spouses in marriages last year were from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, 27.7 percent from Southeast Asian countries, and 16.5 percent from other countries. In total, 149,287 marriages were registered in Taiwan last year, 86.8 percent of which were between Taiwan citizens, according to the report, which was released Saturday. In 2003, Taiwan saw a spike in the number of the transnational marriages to 31.86 percent of the total number registered in the country. Over 60 percent of the transnational weddings that year involved Chinese spouses, which led Taiwan authorities to suspect that marriage was being used as means for people to enter and obtain residence in the country, the MOI said in its latest report. As a result, the MOI introduced an interview process for Chinese and other foreign nationals seeking to marry Taiwanese spouses, and the percentage of transnational marriages dropped to 13.2 percent of the total in 2013 and 2014, the ministry said.
