Body found in Nantou County could be that of missing climber

Taipei, Jan. 21 (CNA) A body found in the central county of Nantou could be that of a well-known mountain climber who has been missing for more than a month, but the news was still pending confirmation by his family, local authorities said Wednesday. The body, found by another climber near a valley located about 1,700 meters above sea level in the mountainous county's Renai Township, has been airlifted by helicopter to Nantou's Renai Elementary School, the authorities said. Nantou police said they have notified the family of Hsiao Lien-hsi (???) and asked them to come to the school to see if they can identify the body. Hsiao went climbing on Hehuan Mountain in central Taiwan Nov. 27 and was scheduled to return to his home in Taichung City Dec. 2. His family waited until Dec. 5 and then reported the case to police. After receiving the report, official and private rescue agencies deployed personnel and helicopters to search for Hsiao for more than a month, the local fire department said. Hsiao was a well-known figure in the community of climbers in Taiwan. He set a world record, climbing all of the Taiwan's 100 highest peaks within just 87 days. (By Hsiao Bo-yang and Elaine Hou)
