Bunun people want their traditional territory returned

Taipei, Jan. 21 (CNA) Bunun (???) aboriginal people at Lidao (??) on the Southern Cross-island Highway (??) will be accompanied by representatives of two other indigenous tribes -- the Rukai (???) and the Amis (???) -- to the mountainous areas Thursday to proclaim that they want their territory returned to them so they can start cultivating. Pastor Kavas (???) of Lidao aboriginal village said he went last year to Sanchia Mountain, a migration watershed of the Bunun tribe, to proclaim that the tribe wanted the territory back, but said the government has yet to give a positive response. "I'll go up the mountain again with the tribespeople of the Amis and Rukai to once again proclaim ownership of land in the area over 2,300 meters," he said. He said that the land used to be the highest arable land used by the Bunun, where they planted maize, sugar cane, cassava and sweet potato. The Bunun people think the land comes from nature and the ancestors. It should be shared and does not belong to the government. Therefore, they want their traditional territory back. The tribespeople from the Bunun, Amis and Rukai said that because the government has not cherished the land and managed it well, they want it back. (By Tyson Lu and Lilian Wu)
