Next Wang-Zhang meet set for February in Kinmen

Chairman Wang Yu-chi of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) confirmed Wednesday morning that his next meeting with his counterpart, Director Zhang Zhijun of China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), will take place in Kinmen in February.

Rumors had been emerging that the two would get together at some point prior to the break for the Chinese New Year, which runs from February 18 to 23 this year. Wang Yu-chi appeared before the Internal Affairs Committee of the Legislative Yuan Wednesday, and KMT Legislator Wu Yu-sheng asked him to confirm the date and place. Wang disclosed that a meeting would probably take place early in February, with the venue set for Kinmen.

Wang said that topics being considered for the agenda include some relevant to the Kinmen area such as intrusions by fishing boats, garbage drifting ashore from nearby rivers on China’s coast and illegal dredging of sand. Other topics might include cross-strait passenger transit, regional economic integration and the mutual establishment of offices by MAC and TAO.

Wang also noted that China has unilaterally announced several new flight routes in the Taiwan Strait which it plans to implement March 5. He said the new routes present some serious problems related to flight safety and indicated he will express Taiwan’s opposition to the new routes when he meets Zhang

Wang said that as things stand now, the meeting should take place “on the eve of the Chinese New Year”, but MAC is still waiting for a response from the Chinese side to before issuing a final confirmation.
