First cold front of the year to arrive soon: weather bureau

Taipei, Jan. 20 (CNA) The first cold front of the year will hit Taiwan on Wednesday evening and send the mercury plummeting to 8 degrees Celsius in the northern and northeastern parts of the island, the Central Weather Bureau forecast Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to drop to 10 degrees in Taipei and to 10-11 degrees in Kaohsiung in the warmer south at night after the cold front arrives, bureau forecasters said. Because of the cold front's dry nature, however, temperatures will remain relatively warm during daylight hours ahead of the weekend, ranging between 17 to 24 degrees, the bureau said. It said temperatures will start rising again by Jan. 24 as the cold front weakens. Tuesday was the first day of the "major cold" term, one of the 24 solar terms of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is the coldest term of the year, and will last until Feb. 4 this year. According to the weather bureau, temperatures were at 13-16 degrees around Taiwan early Tuesday morning, with Wuqi District in Taichung and Hsinchu County recording the lows of 12.7 degrees.
