Lawmakers, officials visit I-Mei factory

A delegation of legislators and food safety officials visited the I-Mei Foods Co., Ltd., factory in Taoyuan County Monday to learn more about the practice of food safety. I-Mei Foods General Manager Luis Kao briefed the visitors on food safety law issues in a workshop attended by Kuomintang legislators Wang Yu-min, Chiang Huei-chen, Hsu Shao-ping, and Yang Yu-hsin, Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker Tien Chiu-chin, Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) Vice Minister Shiu Ming-neng, and FDA Deputy Director-General Chiang Yu-mei.

Taiwan was hit by several serious food fraud and adulteration scandals over the past year, while the company remains its credibility as a supplier for its long-term adoption of a rigorous self-inspection mechanism. Kao offered 12 bits of advice for the government in tackling food safety problems, including the development of an interdepartmental coordination mechanism, providing food safety education, guidance, and assistance to small local food vendors, performing inspection and certification rules in line with international standards, and establishing a used cooking oil recycling system.
