National Tsing Hua University to not retain Wang Dan after July

Taipei, Jan. 17 (CAN) Wang Dan, a leader of the 1989 pro-democracy protests at Tiananmen Square in Beijing and a visiting professor at National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu, said on his Facebook page Saturday that his contract with NTHU will not be renewed after it expires in July. Wang said NTHU President Hong Hocheng informed him of the decision on Jan. 14, citing the university's policy of not renewing contracts of faculty working on a contract basis. Wang said Hocheng suggested that he try to land a permanent job in the United States. Wang was recruited by NTHU in 2012 and he signed a three-year contract. But his support for the Sunflower Movement protests in Taipei in March 2014 mired him in controversy. His defense more recently of a Sunflower Movement leader who had a record of sexual harassment offended many people who urged the university to let him go. (By Maubo Chang)
