Typhoon foils meeting between Tzu Chi members and Pope Francis

Manila, Philippines Jan. 17 (CNA) Representatives of Taiwan's Tzu Chi Foundation were not able to meet Pope Francis in the Philippines as planned Saturday due to Typhoon Mekkhala. The pope is in the Philippines for a five-day state and pastoral visit. He flew to Leyte in the central Philippines on Saturday to visit victims of Typhoon Haiyan and had scheduled a meeting there with 300 people, including a 60-member delegation comprising Tzu Chi members. The trip, however, was cut short due to the approaching Typhoon Mekkhala, leading to the cancellation of the planned meeting. Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines in November 2013, left at least 6,300 people dead, 28,000 injured, over 1,000 missing and 100,000 homeless. In the wake of the disaster, Tzu Chi took an active part in the rescue and relief efforts and donated 50 million Philippine pesos to rebuild a church destroyed by the storm. The pope had intended to express his appreciation to Tzu Chi in person for the help provided to the typhoon victims, according to a source. On Sunday, the pope is expected to meet briefly with religious leaders at the University of Santo Tomas. Buddhist Master Hsing Yun from Taiwan will be among the participants at the meeting. The pope is scheduled to leave the Philippines on Monday. (By Emerson Lim and Y.F. Low)
