South Africa scores 279 vs West Indies in 1st ODI

DURBAN, South Africa (AP) -- AB de Villiers top-scored with 81 to give South Africa a strong total before rain cut short its innings and left the West Indies chasing 229 in 33 overs in the first ODI at Kingsmead on Friday.

De Villiers was well supported by Hashim Amla and David Miller as South Africa reached 279-8 in 48.2 overs, before rain swept in to shorten the game.

The South African captain shared a 99-run stand with Amla, who scored 66 as he became the fastest batsman to 5,000 ODI runs, and then added 123 for the fourth wicket with Miller, who scored 70.

The innings was stymied by Andre Russell's brilliance in the final 10 overs, however, which saw the South Africans lose five wickets for 34 runs.
