Taipei Zoo solicits support for online panda awards

Taipei, Jan. 14 (CNA) The Taipei Zoo is asking Web users to show their support for young giant panda and zoo superstar Yuan Zai, as well as one of her keepers, as both are in the running for two Giant Panda Zoo Awards, an online prize dedicated to panda conservation. The zoo asked animal lovers to vote for 18-month-old Yuan Zai, who has just begun living apart from her mother, and Chen Yu-yen, the human director of the Panda House. While the young panda is in vying for "Panda Personality of 2014,"Chen is competing in the category of "Human Panda Personality of 2014." Some 240,000 online ballots were cast during last year's competition, in which Yuan Zai won the "Panda Personality of 2013: The Bear." Voting will continue through Jan. 18 on the Giant Panda Zoo website, founded by Belgian panda enthusiast Jeroen Jacobs. The website can be found at: http://www.giantpandazoo.com/panda/giantpandazooawards/voting/ The now 50-kilogram Yuan Zai has been wildly popular since her birth at the Taipei Zoo in July 2013 to Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, a pair of giant pandas given to Taiwan by China five years ago.
