SALZBURG, Austria (AP) -- The International Biathlon Union says former world championship medalist Sergei Sednev of Ukraine has failed a doping test.
The IBU says Sednev was targeted as part of a program to re-test older samples which "showed atypical results in the previous seasons." It did not say which banned substances had been found.
The Ukrainian biathlon federation said Sednev provided a sample in January 2013 that contained a "banned substance," but was only notified last month.
The Ukrainian federation said in a statement Monday it had questioned Sednev, who "could not explain or disprove" the test results.
Sednev won a bronze medal in the relay at the 2011 world championships.
The 31-year-old athlete announced his decision to retire last month, but the federation said this was not because of the positive test.
