Changhua sets up task force to handle avian flu

Taipei, Jan. 12 (CNA) Changhua County established a task force Monday to respond to the outbreak of avian flu strains hitting several counties, including neighboring Yunlin. The decision came after the quarantine office under the Council of Agriculture confirmed a day earlier that four goose farms in Yunlin and a duck farm in Pingtung were hit by a new strain of H5N2 virus, while a goose farm in Chiayi County was struck with H5N8, a subtype of the avian flu virus. In a meeting of the cross-agency task force, Changhua Magistrate Wei Ming-ku asked poultry farms in the central county to cooperate with disinfection efforts and said the county government would grant subsidies if farmers take the initiative and apply for disinfection. According to the magistrate, a goose farm in Dacheng Township reported 60 geese died over the weekend and another 59 earlier Monday. Wei vowed that authorities will examine all poultry farms in the county and respond rapidly if any suspicious cases are found to prevent the avian flu from spreading further. There are more than 1,000 poultry farms in Changhua County, making it an egg production hub. (By Hsiao Po-yang and Flor Wang)
