Taiwan confirms goose farm hit by H5N8 avian flu

Taipei, Jan. 11 (CNA) Taiwan's agriculture minister has confirmed that the H5N8 avian influenza virus has been detected in Taiwan for the first time. Council of Agriculture chief Chen Bao-ji said Sunday that laboratory tests on tissue samples from geese raised for breeding in Chiayi County found the virus. He did not offer any further details.
Duck and goose farms in Pingtung, Chiayi and Yunlin counties have been reporting abnormal egg production and deaths since Friday following an outbreak of the H5N2 virus at a chicken farm in Pingtung County, leading to suspicions that they had also been hit by avian flu.
As animal health authorities collected samples from the affected farms to identify the virus, some farm operators suspected that the fowl could have been infected with H5N8, a highly pathogenic influenza A subtype. (By Elizabeth Hsu)
