South Korean singing miracle connects with Taiwanese audience

Taipei, Jan. 11 (CNA) South Korean tenor Bae Jae-chul, who lost his voice to cancer and then made a miraculous comeback, moved an audience in Taipei on Saturday with his story and voice. Appearing at the Taiwan premiere of his biographical film "The Tenor -- Lirico Spinto" at the Grace Baptist Church, he struck a chord with the 1,200 people in attendance with an emotional performance of "Amazing Grace." The audience gave the singer a standing ovation after the screening of the film, which will hit theaters in Taiwan on Jan. 16. The biopic recounts the life of the gifted tenor, who lost his voice to thyroid cancer at the age of 35 in 2005. Bae, who was considered one of the world's best opera singers at the peak of his career, regained his voice and returned to the stage three years later after his Japanese music producer convinced him to undergo surgery. Bae, who arrived in Taiwan on Jan. 8, expressed the hope of performing at the National Concert Hall in Taipei in the future. (By Wang Ching-yi and Christie Chen)
