David Ferrer withdraws from Heineken Open

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) -- Top-seeded David Ferrer has withdrawn from next week's Heineken Tennis Open in Auckland because of a back strain, becoming the third seeded player to pull out of the event.

Ferrer, a four-time winner of the Auckland tournament, withdrew after beating Thomas Berdych 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the Qatar Open. The 10th-ranked Spaniard will still travel to Auckland to prepare for the Australian Open but has advised organizers he won't play.

His withdrawal follows those of seventh seed John Isner, the defending champion who cited tiredness after playing for the United States at the Hopman Cup mixed teams tournament in Perth, sixth-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils, who withdrew for personal reasons.
