Solar energy sector output seen as having rebounded in 2014

Taipei, Jan. 10 (CNA) Taiwan's solar energy sector is expected to report an output value of more than NT$150 billion (US$4.69 billion) for 2014, topping the 2013 figure, because of rising global demand, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). The 2014 output could be the third highest in the sector's history after NT$201.5 billion recorded in 2010 and NT$170.8 billion registered in 2011. In the first 10 months of 2014, the output of Taiwan's solar energy manufacturers totaled NT$131.8 billion, surpassing the NT$124.3 billion in output recorded for all of 2013, the MOEA said. The 10-month figure represented a 33.2 percent year-on-year increase. The ministry said that while Taiwan's solar energy sector was hurt to some extent in the second half of last year amid fears over U.S. anti-dumping tariffs, output for the whole year could still exceed NT$150 billion. In mid-December, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued a final decision on an anti-dumping investigation against Taiwan's solar cell exporters. It cut the anti-dumping tariff Taiwanese firms will face to a between 11.45 percent and 27.55 percent, down from a range of 20.86 percent and 27.59 percent suggested in a preliminary ruling made in July. The MOEA said local solar energy product suppliers depend heavily on exports, with more than 82 percent of their goods sold overseas in the first 10 months of 2014. China was the biggest buyer, followed by Japan and Germany. The ministry said that as the solar energy production process moved closer to the process used for semiconductors that Taiwan has mastered, the sector's output grew year after year until hitting a high in 2010. Taiwanese solar product suppliers then began facing escalating price competition from China and saw their output value fall to NT$96.4 billion in 2012, down 43.6 percent from a year earlier, the MOEA said. The global solar energy supply chain then began consolidating, and the production value of the solar energy sector recovered to NT$124.3 billion in 2013, the MOEA added.
