Strong winds cancel women's World Cup downhill in Austria

BAD KLEINKIRCHHEIM, Austria (AP) -- Strong winds and mild temperatures have forced organizers to cancel a women's World Cup downhill event scheduled in Austria on Saturday.

An overnight storm has blown away parts of the safety fencing along the course and destroyed much of the finish area, including the booths for TV and radio commentators and a temporary stage for the public bib draws and concerts.

Also, temperatures have risen to over 10 degrees Celsius (50F), affecting the icy surface of the course.

The International ski federation is yet to decide on Sunday's program, which consists of a super-G on the same course.
