MALABO, Equatorial Guinea (AP) -- African Cup of Nations host Equatorial Guinea has appointed Esteban Becker as national team coach.
The Argentine's appointment was announced by the government information office. It says a settlement has been reached with Andoni Goikoetxea, who was fired last month.
Becker takes over a team that is fortunate to play in this year's African Cup after Equatorial Guinea was disqualified from the Jan. 17-Feb. 8 tournament for fielding ineligible players in qualifying. It was reinstated by the Confederation of African Football when Equatorial Guinea was chosen as stand-in host in place of Morocco, which pulled out over fears over the spread of Ebola.
Becker coached Equatorial Guinea's women's team to the African title in 2012 and previously held the role of technical director for all national squads.
