Released ex-president returns home

Kaohsiung, Jan. 5 (CNA) Former President Chen Shui-bian was welcomed home in Kaohsiung on Monday night by several thousands of his supporters after being released from Taichung Prison on medical parole earlier in the day. His supporters began to gather around his residence in downtown Kaohsiung at 2 p.m., and members of the Taiwan North Society traveled from Taipei by bus to express their support. The supporters unfurled banners reading "A-bian (the nickname of the former president) is not guilty," and "Go A-bian!" And they also shouted slogans to cheer him on. The former president was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined NT$250 million in a series of corruption cases that surfaced shortly after his second term ended in 2008. He began serving his sentence on Nov. 11, 2010, but he had been detained for nearly two years prior to that while prosecutors were investigating and prosecuting the cases.
