Taiwan shares slide more than 100 points

Taipei, Jan. 5 (CNA) Taiwan shares dropped below the 9,300-point mark in mid-session Monday, the first trading day after the four-day New Year holiday, in a knee-jerk reaction to weakness in the U.S. stock market, dealers said. As of 9:24 a.m., the weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange had plunged 120 points to 9,182.02. Over the past few days, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has lost 150.08 points. The S&P 500 index, meanwhile, has fallen 22.15 points and the Nasdaq composite index has declined 50.63 points. (By Jackson Chang and Y.F. Low)
