Ex-president Chen's request for medical parole under review

Taipei, Jan. 5 (CNA) Former President Chen Shui-bian's request for medical parole was being evaluated by a 10-member panel at the Ministry of Justice's Agency of Corrections on Monday morning. The panel, led by Agency of Corrections Director Wu Hsien-chang, is expected to make a decision by noon. Chen, who was president from 2000 to 2008, has served more than six years of a 20-year sentence for corruption. His health has been rapidly declining over the past few years and he has developed problems such as loss of motor control and incontinence. A team of doctors has recommended that he be released from prison on medical parole, in light of his deteriorating health. (By Page Tsai, Liu Shih-yi and Y.F. Low)
