Fate of ex-President Chen Shui-bian to be revealed by noon Monday

Taipei, Jan.4 (CNA) The fate of jailed former President Chen Shui-bian's request for medical parole will be decided by noon on Monday, the Ministry of Justice said Sunday. Deputy Minister Chen Ming-tang (no relation to the former president) guaranteed that the decision will be made public around noon on the first workday of the year after a 10-member assessment team headed by Agency of Corrections Director Wu Sen-chang makes a final decision. But he added that the protest by former Vice President Annette Lu, who was hospitalized Thursday after days of hunger strike, is not a factor that will be taken into consideration. It was widely expected that Chen Shui-bian could be released on medical parole on New Year's Eve, but the Justice Ministry failed to do so, citing traffic congestion which prevented documents from reaching the agency headquarters before work ended and nobody on shift over the New Year's long weekend. Chen Shui-bian, president from 2000 to 2008, has served more than six years out of a 20-year sentence for corruption, but his health has been rapidly declining over the past few years with symptoms such as loss of motor control and incontinence. A team of doctors has recommended his release on medical parole given his worsening conditions. (By S.Y. Liu and Flor Wang)
