Award-winning playwright Eve Ensler to give talk in Taiwan

Taipei, Jan. 4 (CNA) Tony Award-winning playwright and activist Eve Ensler will give a talk in Taiwan this weekend to share her work in ending violence against women, according to a local charity. The renowned American feminist will speak about her One Billion Rising campaign at the talk in Taipei on Jan. 10, according to the Garden of Hope Foundation, which heads the campaign in Taiwan. On Jan. 12, Ensler and representatives from the foundation and women's groups from other Asian countries will jointly announce an action plan to improve women's status, the foundation said. Ensler is best known for her 1996 play "The Vagina Monologues," which relate stories about sex, love, rape and other issues affecting women. The One Billion Rising campaign was initiated in 2012 by Ensler's nonprofit V-Day organization, which she founded in 1998. The global campaign is a one-day event held on or around February 14, for women around the world to join together to dance as a call for justice and as a means to raise awareness of violence against women. Thousands of organizations from around the world have participated in the campaign. The name of the One Billion Rising campaign is based on statistics indicating that one in three women on the planet would be beaten or raped during their lifetimes. (By Christie Chen)
