Cyprus FA chief says match-fixing possible

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) -- The president of Cyprus' Football Association says the first division is likely plagued by match-fixing.

Costakis Koutsokoumnis says on Friday that evidence provided by UEFA on 17 different matches suggests the problem exists.

Koutsokoumnis says most of the suspected matches involve teams that faced relegation in the last three years.

He spoke following match-rigging allegations by top referee Marios Panayi that have prompted a police probe.

Koutsokoumnis says he's congratulated Panayi for exposing the problem.

He said he backs setting up an independent board of inquiry to investigate the allegations and possibly assist police.

Koutsokoumnis says the Cyprus FA has done more to thwart match-fixing than any other European counterpart.
