New Year's Concert in Vienna comes to Taiwan

New Year's Concert in Vienna comes to Taiwan

Taipei, Jan. 2 (CNA) The timeless music of the New Year's Concert in Vienna will be heard live in Taiwan during the next week, as a renowned Austrian orchestra launches its Asian tour with a series of concerts in Taipei, Kaohsiung and Hsinchu. The Strauss Festival Orchestra Vienna will begin the Taiwan leg of its tour Saturday with a performance at National Concert Hall in Taipei, then move to Kaohsiung Chihde Hall on Sunday, and the Hsinchu Performing Arts Center next Tuesday. Under the baton of Peter Guth, the orchestra will perform the 75-year-old New Year's Concert in Vienna, which features mainly music composed by the Strauss family -- Johann Strauss I, Johann Strauss II, Josef Strauss and Eduard Strauss. The program includes The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss II, Young Spirit by Johann Strauss I, and Fireproof by Josef Strauss. Guth said he hopes young people in particular will attend the concerts to learn more about the beauty of classical music. "The level of popularity of Johann II in the 19th century was like that of Lady Gaga," said Guth, whose 38-year-old orchestra had performed twice before in Taiwan, in 1990 and 2001. The Taipei concert has sold out but tickets are still available for the performances in Kaohsiung and Hsinchu, according to the organizers. After its Taiwan concerts, the Strauss Festival Orchestra Vienna will perform in Japan and South Korea later this month. It is a tradition for orchestras in Vienna to hold numerous New Year concerts throughout the Austrian capital, which is known as the cradle of classical music. The most famous of these concerts, however, is the New Year's Concert Vienna, which is usually performed each year on the morning of Jan. 1 and is broadcast to an estimated 90 countries around the world.
