Magnitude 4.6 quake rocks eastern Taiwan

Taipei, Jan. 2 (CNA) A magnitude 4.6 earthquake hit eastern Taiwan at 1:10 a.m. Friday, according to the Central Weather Bureau. The earthquake struck in Guangfu township 35.9 kilometers southwest of the Hualien County government office complex at a depth of 13.7 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said. The strongest tremors, which had intensity readings of 4 on Taiwan's 0-7 seismic intensity scale, were felt in Guangfu township. The city of Hualien and Hehuanshan in Nantou County had intensity levels of 2, the bureau said. An earthquake's intensity gauges the actual strength of shaking generated by the temblor in a particular location. (By Y.F. Low)
