Taiwan woman confirmed killed in Shanghai stampede

Taipei, Jan. 1 (CNA) A Taiwanese woman was among the 36 people killed in a New Year's Eve stampede in Shanghai, Taiwan's quasi-official Straits Exchange Foundation said Thursday. Another two women from Taiwan were injured in the incident. The deceased was identified only by her surname Chou. She and the two injured women were said to be colleagues at an accounting firm and on a business trip to the Chinese city.
The stampede occurred during New Year's celebrations in Shanghai's historic waterfront area late Wednesday. It was listed as the worst disaster to hit one of China's showcase cities in recent years. A Shanghai government statement said earlier in the day that some 46 people were receiving hospital treatment, including 14 who were seriously injured. The cause of the incident was still unclear, though some media reports indicated it started when some people in the crowd rushed to grab what they thought was money being tossed from a nearby building.
