High demand at hotels near major attractions over long weekend

Taipei, Jan. 1 (CNA) Hotel rooms located near major attractions around Taiwan are largely fully booked for the four-day New Year weekend, started the year off on a good note for hotel builder-operators. About 90 percent of rooms at major tourist draws such as Beitou in Taipei, known for its hot springs, and the eastern county of Hualien, renowned for its natural beauty, are booked, market sources said. Property developers such as Rich Development Inc., Radium Life Tech Co., and Farglory Group, which operate the hotels they built, are among the beneficiaries of the enthusiastic revelry. Rich Development said that seven of its Lealea Garden hotels around Taiwan are at 80 percent-90 percent capacity over the holiday weekend, and it expects revenues from its hotel operations to grow at least 50 percent from a year earlier. Radium Kagaya Taipei, a Japanese-style hotel operated by developer Radium Tech Life in Beitou, said that 90 percent of its 90 rooms are booked for the New Year holiday, and it has already been fully booked over the Lunar New Year holiday, which will start Feb. 18 and run through Feb. 23. Farglory Hotel, Hualien saw New Year's Day bookings fill two months ago, while New Year's Eve and Jan. 3 have been almost entirely booked out. The hotel said there were special events in and around the hotel to draw in guests, including a countdown party in its lounge bar with a live broadcast of Taiwan's most watched fireworks at the Taipei 101 skyscraper. Farglory said patrons were able to see from the hotel an air show staged by the county government and the Hualien air base in the morning of New Year's Day that featured a flypast by four F-16 jet fighters. The hotel said that it will hold a one-hour jazz concert in the evening with music majors from National Dong Hwa University. (By Wei Shu and Frances Huang)
