Kurds in new Islamic State group offensive in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Iraq's Kurdish authorities say peshmerga forces have launched a large-scale military operation against Islamic State group extremists in country's north.

A statement issued Wednesday by the northern Kurdish authorities says the operation aims at pushing the Islamic State group from an area of about 120 square kilometers (46 square miles) outside the militant-held city of Mosul.

It added that the U.S.-led international coalition also began launching airstrikes against militants' positions to support the ground offensive.

Peshmerga forces, also fighting in the Syrian city of Kobani, recently managed to advance in areas around the militant-held town of Sinjar and to open a corridor to help dozens of Yazidi families on nearby Mount Sinjar.
