Taiwan rings in 2015 with countdowns from north to south

Taipei Dec. 31 (CNA) As the year 2014 entered its waning hours, people in Taiwan hurried to parties across the country to ring in the New Year at celebrations that featured music and fireworks. Taipei's primary New Year's Eve celebrations were held at Civic Square in front of City Hall, where celebrities such as local singers Jam Hsiao and Show Lo and Singaporean singer-songwriter JJ Lin entertained a huge crowd at an open air concert. The Taipei countdown to the New Year began at one minute to midnight, with the celebrities, city officials and the crowd chanting out the seconds. At the stroke of midnight, the nearby Taipei 101 tower, Taiwan's tallest building, blazed into spectacular fireworks that lasted nearly four minutes. The countdown was broadcast live on TV, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted videos of the gala on the websites of its representative offices around the world. At the other end of the country, Kaohsiung in the south also staged major countdown celebrations at the Dream Mall and E-Da World theme park. The Dream Mall celebrations featured electropop diva Jeannie Hsieh, singer A-Lin, pop-rock band Sodagreen and others, while the E-Da World party included pop singers Jolin Tsai and Hebe Tian and the band Magic Power. Tsai sang dozens of her favorite songs in a 30-minute performance. The other acts included 14 pairs of entertainers. In neighboring Tainan, a countdown was held at the High Speed Rail Station, featuring singers Kenji Wu and Tiger Huang and rapper Dog G (Dwagie). Meanwhile, the major celebrations in central Taiwan were held in Taichung, at National Taiwan University of Physical Education and Sport and at Taichung Fengyuan District Stadium. The events featured singers Cyndi Wang and William Wei, along with Jeannie Hsieh, who performed for nearly 28 minutes alone and handed out nearly 10,000 red envelopes to the audience. In Taoyuan, which was upgraded to a special municipality on Dec. 25, the New Year's Eve party was held at the Art and Cultural Park, headlined by singers Show Luo and Crowd Lu. The various public countdown celebrations across the country attracted millions of participants. (By Maubo Chang)
