Google making additional investment in central Taiwan data center

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) The Investment Commission of the Ministry of Economic Affairs said Wednesday it has approved a proposal by Google Inc. to add NT$2.1 billion (US$66.40 million) to its investment in a data center in central Taiwan. Google has invested US$600 million to set up a data center in an industrial park in Changhua County, central Taiwan. The additional investment was made through Google's affiliate Kohl Holdings Limited, according to the Investment Commission. Last month, a local newspaper reported that the Google investment project might have prompted Microsoft Corp. to consider building a data center in southern Taiwan. The Economic Daily quoted unnamed sources as reporting that Microsoft is planning to invest at least US$600 million early next year to cater to Taiwan's original design manufacturers.
