26 newly elected officials charged with electoral fraud

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Twenty-six newly elected local government officials in southern Taiwan were arrested and charged Wednesday with electoral fraud. The Changhua District Prosecutors Office, which made the arrests, said it is seeking to invalidate the election of two county councilors, one township chief, eight village and borough chiefs, and 15 township councilors, all in Changhua County. The two county councilors are accused of making cash payments to buy votes in the Nov. 29 local government elections. During the course of the recent local government elections, the Changhua Prosecutors Office said, it investigated 615 suspected cases of electoral fraud and seized about NT$1.11 million in cash. Changhua prosecutors said they have indicted 48 people in 45 cases of electoral fraud and have deferred prosecution in the case of 113 other suspects. (By Wu Jhe-hao and Ted Chen)
