Second magnitude 5 quake shakes Taiwan on same day

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale rocked Taiwan at 3:54 p.m. Wednesday, the second earthquake of magnitude 5 or above to hit the island on the same day, according to Central Weather Bureau data. The latest temblor occurred off the coast of northeastern Taiwan, 87.5 kilometers east-southeast of the Yilan County government office complex at a depth of 83.1 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said. The strongest tremor, which reached an intensity of 3 on Taiwan's 0-7 seismic intensity scale, was felt in the town of Nanao in Yilan County. In other parts of Yilan County, along with areas in Hualien City, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Nantou County, Taichung, Hsinchu, Taitung County and Changhua County, the shaking reached an intensity of 2. Shaking was also felt in Taiwan's capital Taipei, where an intensity of 1 was recorded. Earlier in the day, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck in Toucheng Township about 18.2 km north of the Yilan County offices at a depth of 67.7 km.
