Stock investors in Taiwan earn average of NT$248,000 in 2014

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Taiwan's stock market gained 8.08 percent in 2014, one of the best performances in East Asia, with the average stockholder earning an average of NT$248,000 (US$7,837). The gains made meant that the market value of listed shares increased by more than NT$2.3 trillion over the year, an average of NT$248,000 for each of the 9.43 million stock account holders in the market. If divided by Taiwan's population of 23 million, then the gains represented an increase of NT90,000 in each person's wealth.
The 8.08 percent gains for the year in Taiwan outperformed the main markets in South Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore but trailed behind the gains made in China and Japan, where the Nikkei 225 was up 9.69 percent for the year. The benchmark index hit the year's low in February at 8,230.46 and the year's high in July at 9,593.68.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the heaviest weighted stock on the exchange, rose nearly 34 percent over the year and contributed over NT$1 trillion of the NT$2.3 trillion the market gained in value in 2014. Smartphone camera lens maker Largan Precision Co., which closed at NT$2,395 on Wednesday, reached the highest share price for any individual stock during the year at NT$2,640 on July 16. Taiwan shares closed up 38.83 points, or 0.41 percent, on Wednesday to end the year at 9,307.26. That is the highest the index has been at the end of a year in 25 years.
