Prosecutors file to annul election of Tainan City Council speaker

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Prosecutors in Tainan have moved to invalidate the city council speakership of Lee Chuan-chiao from the Kuomintang (KMT) over vote-buying allegations after he won a surprise victory last week, despite his party holding less than one-third of seats on the council. Lai Mei-hui of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lost to Lee in a 29-26 vote with two abstentions, despite the DPP holding 28 seats to the KMT's 16 in the 57-member council. Some politicians from DPP have also said the KMT paid DPP councilors up to NT$10 million (US$316,000) to back Lee in the Dec. 25 speakership vote. During the run-up to the Nov. 29 municipal elections, the campaign manager for Lee, then a candidate for city council, as well as one of his backers were detained for offering cash to voters in exchange for their support. The Tainan District Prosecutors Office is also seeking to nullify the election victories of 10 ward chiefs in the city for alleged vote-buying. Tainan is a stronghold of the DPP, which has been run by the party uninterrupted since 1997. (By Chang Jung-hsiang and Y.F. Low)
