Taiwan's housing transactions this year could hit 13-year low

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) The transaction volume of residential properties across Taiwan over 2014 is likely to set a 13-year low due to extended weakness in the property market, a market analyst said Wednesday. With home sales remaining sluggish after the Nov. 29 local government elections, transactions for the whole year may register less than 320,000 units nationwide, the third lowest level in decades following only the 289,000 units that changed hands in 1991 and the 259,000 in 2001, according to Hsu Chia-hsin, chief of planning and research at H&B Realty. Among major cities, Kaohsiung and Taichung have seen home transactions in December decline 10.99 percent and 5.66 percent, respectively, from last month. Transactions in Taipei, New Taipei and Taoyuan have however gained 13.66 percent, 11.18 percent and 4.55 percent, respectively, Hsu said. In December, properties in lower price ranges have sold better than more expensive ones, she said. (By Wei Shu and Y.F. Low)
