Hotel rooms near Taipei 101 in demand for New Year's

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Rooms of hotels adjacent to Taipei 101 are nearly fully booked for New Year's Eve as people are eager to see the skyscraper's annual fireworks extravaganza from up close, hotels said Wednesday. With new designs expected to account for more than 70 percent of the show's 218 seconds this year, many people have rushed to book a hotel room near Taipei 101, a move which is expected to significantly boost the hotels' revenue. The year-end countdown party being held outside of Taipei City Hall, which is adjacent to Taipei 101, has also drawn people to nearby hotels to have more time to celebrate the occasion. The Grand Hyatt Taipei, which is only one block from Taipei 101, is one of the hotels that have benefited from interest in the year-end fireworks display and the countdown party, with many patrons who stayed at the hotel for last year's event making reservations again this year. The hotel has offered a special two-night New Year's package costing NT$16,000 (US$506) per person per night that is fully booked, with foreign nationals accounting for 70 percent of the reservations. Because the Grand Hyatt completed a remodeling project in the first half of this year, it will have 853 rooms available for the upcoming New Year's events, compared with only 400 rooms available last year, meaning that its revenue could double from last year.
Le Meridien Taipei is another beneficiary of the New Year's Eve festivities. The hotel said that its 160 rooms are nearly all reserved for the New Year's festivities, with 50-60 percent of the reservations made by Taiwanese nationals. In addition to its room bookings, Le Meridien Taipei said that its Latest Recipe restaurant and Quube Lounge Bar are also fully booked for New Year's Eve as they offer good views of Taipei 101 and will give customers a close look at the fireworks.
