Cold, windy New Year's Eve forecast

Cold, windy New Year's Eve forecast

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Those preparing to go outdoors for New Year's Eve celebrations and fireworks should bundle up and find the right spot as a cold and windy night is expected, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Wednesday. The bureau has issued a gust warning on coastal areas as well as the outlying islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Penghu, Green Island and Orchid Island, forecasting wind speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour. Although metropolitan areas will not likely be affected as much, people heading out for New Year's Eve festivities should try to position themselves east or north of the fireworks site because seasonal winds are from the northeast, forecasters explained. Also, temperatures could dip overnight to 11-13 degrees Celsius across Taiwan due to an approaching cold air mass, the bureau warned. The mercury will be at its lowest during the four-day New Year holiday late Thursday night and early Friday morning, plummeting to 9 degrees in rural open areas in northern and central Taiwan, the CWB said. The good news is, however, that mostly cloudy to sunny skies are expected islandwide, except for small chances of rain in eastern Taiwan, the bureau said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
