NEW YORK (AP) -- The Waterford crystal ball is ready for its New Year's close-up.

The glittering, nearly 12,000-pound (5,443-kilogram) ball was tested Tuesday ahead of the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square, where tens of thousands of revelers are expected to ring in 2015.

Security will be tight, with radiation detectors and scores of police officers on the scene for Wednesday's countdown to midnight.

Workers coiled massive cables as the ball went up and down the flagpole atop 1 Times Square on Tuesday. Multi-colored lights flickered.

Jeffrey Straus, president of the Times Square Alliance, says the New Year's Eve program keeps getting better. This year, performances are planned by Taylor Swift, Idina Menzel and Magic!

Ryan Seacrest will host the countdown.
