Prosecutors begin probe into hippo's death

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) The Taichung District Prosecutors Office on Tuesday opened an investigation into the death of A He, the hippo whose death after serious injuries sustained in transportation accidents has caused the nation to reflect on the way display animals are treated. The office said that if the leisure farm that displayed A He is found to have abused or harmed any animals, the owner will face up to one year in prison under the Animal Protection Act. The 1,190-kilogram A He, who belonged to Skyzoo in Taichung, was found dead early Monday morning in a pond where he had been given shelter since Saturday to recuperate from a series of injuries. On Friday, A He jumped from a truck and injured himself while being transported from temporary housing in Miaoli County back to the recently renovated farm, his home of eight years. The hippo suffered yet another fall Saturday as he was being moved to the pond for treatment. The accident occurred when a cable on a hoist broke and the container in which the hippo was being transported crashed to the ground from a height of 2 meters. Taipei Zoo, which performed an autopsy, said that A He died from a torn diaphragm. A 30-40 centimeter rupture was found on the right side of the hippo's diaphragm, which caused a lung to slip from the chest cavity down to the abdominal cavity.
