Mayday to join concert at Kaohsiung gas blast site

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) Pop-rock band Mayday will be among the stars to join a New Year's Day concert at the site of the July gas explosions in Kaohsiung to boost tourism and help the disaster area recover. The concert is set to feature the Golden Melody Award-winning band along with bands Cosmos People, Mixer and Magic Power and pop singers Jia Jia, Ann Bai, Yen-j, Luantan Ascent, Tiger Huang and Della. Jointly organized by the city government and B'in Music Co., the free concert will be held Jan. 1 at the intersection of Ersheng and Kaisyuan 3rd roads. It will be streamed live on B'in Music Co.'s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/binmusictaipei and on the video-sharing website Tudou http://v.tudou.com/binmusic2012. In addition to the concert, Mayday will also hold a series of concerts on Dec. 31, Jan. 2 and Jan. 3 at the National Stadium in Kaohsiung. The Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau estimated that Mayday's various concerts will generate several hundred million New Taiwan dollars (US$3.15 million and up) in revenues for the city. The gas explosions in Kaohsiung occurred just before midnight on July 31, leaving 32 dead and 321 injured. Mayday, which has been a goodwill ambassador for tourism in Kaohsiung for years, donated NT$15 million (US$473,036) to the city's disaster relief fund. After restoration work, the four major roads hit -- Yisin, Ersheng, Sanduo and Kaisyuan roads -- and various alleys nearby were opened for traffic in late November. (By Christie Chen)
