Presidential Office denies resignation of defense minister

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) The Presidential Office has denied a Tuesday report that Defense Minister Yen Ming submitted his resignation to President Ma Ying-jeou in order to pave the way for younger leadership of the military. A source in the office said that the president respects military ethics and makes his appointments based on the merits of each individual, dismissing the report that Ma wanted to install someone closer to him. Online news site Storm Media Group reported earlier in the day that Yen, 65, had met with Ma twice recently to resign from his position to promote younger leadership. It claimed that the proposal was not approved by Ma, quoting a military source that said Chief of General Staff Admiral Kao Kuang-chi, a confidant of Ma and brother of former Presidential Office Deputy Secretary-General Kao Lang, was up for the minister post in a future military personnel reshuffle.
